It’s All Over

Just like that.
Goodnight baseball in Boston. You look forward to the playoffs all year and before your weekend is over, your season is done.
Half, if not three-quarters of the Red Sox did not show up for the ALDS. When Jacoby Ellsbury is your best offensive player with a team-high .250 BA, you probably have a lot of deadweight in the lineup. No bigger 2009 bust than David Ortiz. Mike Lowell eeked out one long single in the series and Dustin Pedroia salvaged another ALDS disappearance with a double in Game 4.
The Red Sox decided somewhere along the way that they didn’t really want to fight anymore. Daniel Bard showed up to play. Clay Buchholz was great through five innings. Jonathan Papelbon wasn’t good for five minutes. His postseason scoreless streak was promptly dismissed as quickly as the team was from the playoffs.
This next week will usher in the Bard/Papelbon closer role discussion. Francona will be questioned for his move in the 9th where he pinch hit Jed Lowrie for Alex Gonzalez even though Lowrie has proven he sucks.
I want to give Anaheim and I know that I should, so congratulations Angels. You definitely outplayed the Red Sox and it is pathetic that I have nothing else I can say about it. It’s embarrassing that this team sleepwalked through first two games and then fell asleep again late in Game 3. I hope you beat the Yankees and then lose to someone in the NL.
The Red Sox deserve to be recognized for producing another playoff berth in Boston. It is just extremely disappointing that they laid an egg.
