Will The Red Sox Have A Friend In San Diego?
October 13th, 2009 | by Darryl Johnston |Jed Hoyer may end up as the GM in San Diego.
Rumor has it that Hoyer is the front-runner for the job.
Will this set the wheels in motion for the Red Sox to acquire 1B Adrian Gonzalez? The Padres were reluctant to part with the stud first baseman as several rumored deals, involving multiple Red Sox prospects, were turned down in July.
With Hoyer as the GM, he may see the Red Sox farm system as a fast way to revamp the San Diego organization. He may also see Gonzalez as the cornerstone of the team and also refuse to part with the big left-handed bat.
If a deal were to be made, you may have to count with both hands the prospects that would need to be sent to Petco Park. You are looking at a combination of Clay Buchholz (supposedly untouchable), Lars Anderson, Josh Reddick, Ryan Kalish and Michael Bowden, Casey Kelly, etc.
Having Hoyer in the San Diego front office might give the Red Sox a legitimate chance at prying Gonzalez away. This is provided that Hoyer could deploy all of the players immediately and that he value the players as highly as the media does.

I think the Sox need to give up the hunt for Gonzalez. He’s staying put.

I think as long as San Diego is struggling with finances, they will always have an open ear. Doesn’t mean they won’t be asking the world for Gonzalez, but where he might be the most obtainable slugger out there for the Sox to acquire, we’ll need to keep considering it an option and possibility.
